Shweshwe is a distinct, 100% cotton printed fabric famous in Southern Africa for its intricate geometric patterns, stiffness, and vibrant colors. Often called the “denim of South Africa,” it is traditionally used for ceremonial and everyday clothing. [
Key Characteristics
The Look: Characterized by geometric patterns, diamonds, stripes, and floral motifs. It is traditionally indigo, chocolate brown, and red, though it is now produced in a rainbow of bright colors.
The Feel & Smell: Genuine Shweshwe is highly starched during production. This gives the cloth a stiff, papery texture and a distinct, tangy smell. Both characteristics vanish after the first wash, leaving a soft, breathable cotton.
The Print Process: Known as “indigo-dyed discharge printing”. The fabric is dyed entirely, then fed through copper rollers that use an acid solution to bleach out the color in pinpoint-accurate patterns.
Authenticity: True Shweshwe is manufactured in South Africa by and features signature branding (such as the “Three Cats” or “Three Leopards” logo) printed on the reverse side of the cloth.

SoulSlips custom made one pair of soft sole below knee length slippers for my husband who suffers from cold feet and legs from nerve damage and a pair of calf length boots for myself. My daughter and I absolutely love our wool dressing gowns, which arrived very promptly. Mel was wonderful to deal with and the dressing gowns are definitely worth the money. What can I say? Customer service firstly from Melanie was simply excellent. She called to ensure that the sizing was right for me before purchase and even said "if you are not happy, there is a return post bag in the courier bag". I managed to get the below check blanket which is rare in its colour in a correct size M which is 10-12. The cape itself is fairly large so if you are wearing several layers, it would still go well. I am 165cm in height and medium built. I particularly like the "arm openings" and the "leather embellishment". Workmanship is immaculate and I can't wait to use it over winter. Thank you Melanie for taking time to call me to ensure I was happy with the product - I am more than happy to support local when the owner is honest and has great customer service (which is really lacking in many business in NZ). I will treasure this one of a kind made in Waiheke Island, NZ cape and hopefully pass it down to my daughter in years to come. Keep up your wonderful creative work Melanie.

Very excited to receive new slippers from Soul Slips, just in time for winter! They're so comfortable and warm, and the wool is super breathable too. I love that they are made from repurposed woollen blankets and all natural materials - I've been looking for slippers like these for a long time!
